Tassel Fringe - Passementerie, for fund raising and home decorating

Do you love tassels but hate the price tags? No worry here, you will create the best, and most unique tassels very quickly and for pennies!

Tassels, long, short, thick and thin, and all made from string, strand or ribbon and yarn created on My Own Fringemaker. Note the various ways to hang tassels, pink beaded chain, wooden bead, ribbon, string, it's all up to you!
Using tassels known as Passementerie,  for interior decorating is one more layer of jewelry for the house interior. Where will you spend all the money you save creating your own tassels?

The red and black tassel [far left] was made as a fund raiser idea for our local school instead of selling the cookie dough and brownie dough. I'd buy every tassel presented at my door because the kids made them.  The students keep all the money instead of only a small portion of monies raised in many other fund raisers.

Every school club, sorority and organization wanting to raise funds could make and sell tassels.  Using school colors, mixing up textures and combinations of ribbons, yarns and strands would create different tassels each club would have their unique tassels for sale - no duplication.

  HINT: Start watching for sales on ribbons at discount stores.  Hobby Lobby offers 3 spools for a $1.00,  15 yards on each spool that's, 45 yards to work with for a $1.00 - --now that's the way to pay for a fundraiser!  Fifteen spools is only $5. and you'll have 225 yards to create.
Mix up colors and textures, throw in something from your stash and go for it, make some crazy Tassels and watch the  smiles and sales soar!

I think making these tassels during a game would be crazy popular! Have some pre-made so the fans get the idea.

To make tassels with sewn header:

HINT - Remember the instructional videos are behind the HOW TO Tab if you need a refresher on how to sew the header.

Place the rods (in the rod unit) the distance apart you want the overall tassel length to be. Wind your products onto the rods 10 -12 wraps is often enough depending on how thick you want the tassel. 

Remove rod unit from base,Take rod unit to sewing machine. Slide rod under the presser foot and align with presser foot. 

Now sew your header, straight stitch along the rod to anchor all the ribbons and yarns. Sew several passes to create a sturdy header.

Once sewing header is complete, remove rod unit from sewing machine and move rod unit to flat surface to work.

You'll need something sturdy, like a wooden bead or babble to wrap your fringe around, this will be your tassel head.

Glue up a bead, wooden mini spool something to wrap the header around. Once the glue is tacky remove one rotator arm and slide your sewn fringe towards end and gently slip off a few inches and start wrapping the header onto and around the wooden spool or bead. Add more glue as you continue to wrap the header around the wooden bead until you are done.

Tie your tassel head in your choice of materials to achieve the look of one tassel above. Your tassel can have loose or looped ends depending on if you cut the loops...your choice. Done how easy is this!  Now make a dozen!

Tassel Butterfly Style

Butterfly Style Tassel, isn't this sweet? Imagine a diamond ring tied onto the end, hmm hmm - pretty neat!

What about making this tassel and attaching the keys to a new car? It's all in the packaging for those special gifts!

This tassel is easy to make and very fast. I used a red twisted cording and metallic red and blue cording. Using  My Own Fringemaker  place rods approximately   3 1/2" apart. Hold both strands together and tie onto rods.  Turning the crank handle wind on 50 times, this is enough to get the size I want. with these materials.  When tying off, instead of  knotting around a rod, I tied a knot through several strands in the middle so it would be hidden with the final center cord. Next I untied the first knot [tied around the rod] and tied it to a few strands on it's end - - - so it would also be hidden with the final cording wrap.

Next squeeze center together and tie off tightly using button thread.  Remove rod unit from My Own Fringemaker, remove one rotator arm and slide strands off rods. Place strands on flat surface and before they unwind or you move them too much, using the button thread, tie another knot around the center.    With your final cording - try twisting two strands together and wrap several times around the center. Leave a long enough strand to attach a key or whatever you will be attaching this Butterfly Tassel to.

DONE! Very easy - in fact too easy not to make a dozen!  I'm thinking fast fund raisers for schools, churches, clubs, , low cost, big bang. Sell these adorable tassels and deposit the money! Congrats on a good job!  Let me know how it goes!

Red Accent Tassel

Tassels are interior jewelry for your home, however this one has been added to a purse! Check out the Totes and Purses Category for other tassels. Tassels are  easy to make and very rewarding to decorate with - give it  a try!

To make this tassel you will need:

My Own Fringemaker, a medium bead with center hole, small button or bead larger than the center hole in medium sized bead, and  yarn,  straight stitch sewing machine and scissors.

Directions:   place rods 6" apart and wrap your yarn[s] around the rods. Use approximately 7 yards. Wind on down the rods for 7 inches.  Cut and Tie off, knotting around one rod.

Remove rod unit from unit and take to sewing machine. Slide one rod under the presser foot and continue sliding it until the second rod is parallel  to the presser foot. Straight stitch along the rod creating a sewn header. Sew several times. Remove whole rod unit from sewing machine and take to flat surface.

Measure approximate 12"  of your yarn and tie an extra large knot and pull up through the button. The knot might hold better if you pull up your yarn through a button or other small bead, The button or bead should be slightly larger than the center hole in the wooden bead to prevent the knot from pulling through.

Have a medium wooden bead or some other hard round object to wrap your yarn around. Place glue around the wooden bead and let it tack up. Mean while dab glue onto  the tassel header and let it tack up. Gently move the tassel towards open end of rods and inch by inch slide off the rods while wrapping around the wooden bead.  Slide off an inch or two of the tassel, dot glue on, wrap, more glue on stitched header,   continue until the all the tassel is wrapped.

Tassel Mini

A mini tassel in two colors represents  Jing and Yang. Made from Sizzle Thread by Wonderful. Overall length is 3 1/2" inches.

To make this, place rods 3 1/2" apart and wind on one color for about three yards. Knot the loose end around one rod.
Tie on next color and wind separately from first color. Start winding second color onto rods - approximately three yards.
Cut the Sizzle and tie into knot around the rod.

Have ready to use a smallish button or wooden bead from which you thread Sizzle through it for the tassel hanger.
Cut 10" of Sizzle, thread one end through the button shank or holes and knot. The knot will be buried in the tassel skirt.
The tassel will hang from a good looking looped strand.

Choose one of the colors that you will make the head with. Measure approximately 1/2 yard of Sizzle  and wind round and round just under one rod. Every couple of windings tie a knot onto the tassel to anchor this  header neck.  When you are with in approximately four inches, from the end with a tiny hook crochet needle pull the Sizzle up through the windings and knot. Do this a couple of times and end by pulling the loose strand down through the windings to hide your knot. This completes the head of the tassel.

Remove one of the rotator arms and remove the tassel from rods. The Tassel skirt was left looped - however you may cut the loops and have a loose hanging skirted Tassel - totally your option!

This mini tassel would be cute bookmark. Use a tassel instead of a bow for a gift, or use different size tassels as an ornament display. Too cute and very easy to make!

Whimsical Tassel created with Red and Gold Ribbons

Love this tassel - it has personality. Her skirt springs out from beneath the bell with pride. Note the looped end verses loose hanging fringe.

After widing on the ribbon I slipped it off the rods rather than cut it off. To make your tassels, wrap beads by the yard around the top and glue all into a shape, I used holiday bells from tree garland.  At a recent trade show, one lady bought all the silver bells I had. She planned to make silver anniversary tassel favors.  This is fast and easy to do, costs only pennies.

I like gifts and favors that celebrate the occasion, yet are small enough to be tucked away. When small treasures are brought out, it is a memory relived as you hang this tassel on the tree. Enjoy it and tuck it away again - how about these as gifts or fund raiser this year for your group, made up in team colors?

Tassels Fringed Texas Sized!

Our oversized Texas tassel was created with silver eyelash yarn and a small amount of our white strand for the Houston Quilt Market 2010.

NOTE: Towards the end of the rods I wound on approximately 1 yard of narrow 1/8" purple ribbon, that's all I had on hand. Winding on the limited narrow purple ribbon towards one end of the rods because if I started rolling the tassel (after sewing the header) from the opposite end the purple would show on the outer sides of the tassel.

After sewing the header as with almost all tassel fringes I cut up behind the bottom row of stitching releasing half the length to fall, thus creating longer fringe to wind around a  wooden knob, babble or bead  forming the tassel head.

Next  with the rod unit laying on a flat surface, remove the one rotator arm opposite the purple ribbon. The sewn header still in place on the rods.

Find something you can use to place the header into. I used a plastic coffee jar lid about an inch in height 3" across.  As you glue and tuck the header into the coffee jar lid open cavity which holds your sewn header as you go round and round winding and stuffing it into the into jar lid.    Actually you are hiding the header in the lid cavity.   Experiment with a variety of lids. These days I have a dilemmas with plastic lids, is it for recycling or tassels?                                                  

Let the glue tack up for a minute or two, and began sliding the header off the rods inch by inch, winding the header around the plastic piece. Glue and wrap inch by inch towards the end with the extra purple ribbon. Turn the lid right side down. The clean bottom will be what anyone sees if they turn your finished tassel upside down and look under the skirt-so-to-speak. The glued in header will be hidden with additional ornamentation on top the head and hanger. The sky is the limit - make what you want.

Next for the topper:
Thread three small ornaments each onto it's own white strand. Knot the two ends together; you now have three ornaments each on their own strand. Visually divide the lid into thirds and glued the knot into the lid with the glued in header, this both hides and anchors the knots, they won't be seen.  Let the glues dry and then proceed to the next step.

Glue the large purple bead on top of the glued header and knotted strand holding the three purple ornaments. Let glue dry.

The black part is an unfinished game piece with hole drilled through end to end.  I spray painted it black.  Thread with white strand from which the tassel will hang.  To hide the white strand knot tied on top of the wooden game piece from which the tassel will hang; I added one inexpensive purplish bead, pulled the knot up into the bead opening. It just because it looked better with the top bead !

The glue used is 527, but most any permanent glue will work, test the glue you have.

Beautiful Butterfly Tassel

This tassel is so exquisite in person I wish each of you could see it.  The tassel is so easy to make, I used Mini Confetti yarn and a purchased butterfly.

HOW To Make this tassel:

You'll need My Own Fringemaker, mini-confetti yarn, a hollow lid for the center, [I used the red lid from folgers instant coffee]; fabric glue, threaded straight stitch sewing machine and a butterfly.

Set up unit and place rods at furthermost holes.  Wind yarn onto the rods. Take rod unit to sewing machine and sew pararrell to one rod several times to create a header. Take whole rod unit back to your work table. Do not remove yarn at this stage. 

CAREFULLY, place scissor blades between the front and back winding of yarns. Slide open scissor blade upward to just below the header stitching. Now cut a few strands at a time, below the last row of stitching.  This frees the yarn to fall to almost double its length. Be careful not to cut through both layers.

NOTE: before I make each cut, I visually double check on both sides of the rod unit to make sure I can not see the scissor blade. If the blade shows, I back it out and reposition it, visually check again and when there is no scissor blade visible, I cut a few strands. This repeat this stwp until you have cut all the yarn.

Wrap yarn around something to give the tassel skirt width and strength.  I used a red folgers coffee jar lid.
Bring all your materials, rod unit with sewn header, glue, plastic lid to the same flat work area.

Using a small scrap from your stash, wrap the jar lid with fabric to hide the fact it is a jar lid. Tuck loose ends into the empty cavity and dab glue to hold in place.

Continue with jar lid inverted, dribble in some glue into the cavity, I used Beacons FABRIC-TAC.

Next:  Remove one of the rotator arms and slide the header towards to the open end, dab a little glue onto the header and inch by inch slide off the header and wrap the yarn around sufficient enough times to give you  the tassel look you want.  You can use all you prepared or when you have enough bulk for your tassel, cut  through the header stitching and set the left over fringe aside for another project.

Apply glue with each wrap to help it maintain it's shape.  I used a wooden bead  approximately 1" long ( left over from the old macrame days). It had a hole end to end so I threaded strand up through the hole for hanging. The oversized butterflies purchased from Dollar Tree for $1.00 each. They had other bugs too. The butterflies are very colorful and such a delight to use in this unexpected way, as a tassel topper.
Give it a try, You can do this, It is so fun and easy. Everyone Loves them they are so unusual!

Fringe Tassel Western Theme

This fringe tassel was fun to make! Once you make one or two tassels you'll be addicted and want to make more and different tassels.

After winding on to the rods and sewing the header. I cut up behind the last row of stitching; the strand would fall to a longer length. 
Remove one rotator arm.  Set tassel fringe aside.

Now paint or stain the unfinished wooden finial if you have not all ready done so. The unfinished wooden finial we used was purchased at Hobby Lobby.  Spray paint or stain it. While still wet whip off any excess to give it the aged look.

Next using a plastic jar top, I used a plastic pour top from a plastic sugar container. The top measured approximately 1" high and approximate 2" diameter. 

Dripple in enough glue so that you have enough glue to grab and hold the fringe header. Start feeding the fringe header inside this inverted jar top winding around and around inside this inverted jar top, I used Beacon Adhesives FABRI-TAC glue. Bring the rod assembly unit  and the jar cap  to the  same flat surface to work on.   

Start inching off the sewn header and winding around the inside outer edge of the jar cap. You are placing the header into the lid cavity. Around and around you will continue, gluing and inching the sewn header off the rod as you continue. When you are done winding the header completely into the jar cap, the header will  be hidden when people turn your tassel upside down to see how you did this.

Set aside and let glue dry while proceeding to the next step.

Next,  cut 1/8" rust ribbon the length of your tassel (passementerie) skirt plus an inch and glue in ribbon strips equal distance around the plastic jar lid this adds some color for visual punch. Knot each piece of ribbon and glue into the jar cap spacing each ribbon equal distance around the tassel.

Next
Using another strand of ribbon or material of your choice, tie on three small mini tree ornaments [purchased western motifs from Hobby Lobby during  Christmas seasonal sale].  Insert the ribbon through the top of the small western artifact and secure the loose ends with a knot. Glue this knot into the plastic jar lid too to hide the knot.                                                                                                                                                                              

Next:   If the wooden finial is dry to handle, add glue to the bottom of wooden finial and place wooden finial bottom into the sugar lid opening. Placing the finial here will hide all the header and knots for a cleaner look.

To Finish:
Glue the horse feet to the top of the wooden finial. After the glue dries tie a ribbon through the ring, the tassel will hang by the ribbon.Hang the tassel and bask in your glory.   DONE! . . . Well done Pilgrim, as John Wayne, would have said!

Ring Bearer Tux with Fringe Tassel - WeddingTux with tassel too cute!

This tuxedo is so adorable, with matching cumberbund and tassel.  The tassel is easy to make - and so worth the few minutes to create it!  
A  simple DIY tassel project like this definitely steals all hearts at my shows.

If you don't know how to make a cummerbund, there are many free instructions on the internet. I looked there to refresh my memory and it was sufficient to remind me how to make one.  Remember the cumberbund fold is upward to hold the ring, hmmm.

I matched the cummerbund color with the tassel STRAND color. 
Why not make a color coordinated cumberbund and tassel and let the adorable ring bearer steal everyone's heart!  
This is an easy and fun project, worth the few minutes to make a huge impact!

Is this tassel over the top?. . . I think not! This tassel is incredibly beautiful everyone at the show was awed at the results of  Kathi's creative skills! 
Kathi, my assistant at the Eleanor Burns Event in Columbus, Ohio, seized the opportunity to upgrade the tassel by thinking outside the box - didn't she do an incredible job !  We were next store to Big Lots and looked at a variety of trinkets to use as a topper. We were happy with the choice until we walked passed the artificial flowers - they stopped us in our tracks.  Thank you Kathi for all you do, it's SUPER!
