People are amazed this fabulous fringed window treatment was created using string. The crochet string has a metallic thread running along the string, adding shimmer to the over all fringe. I added one strand of beige strand, from my private line coming this fall, to round out the colors. The finished valance fringe has a 3" drop. After winding on and sewing the header, cut the loops from one rod so fringe hangs loose. The tie backs are also made on My Own Fringemaker. The fringed tie backs are looped on both sides of the center header stitching. The look is very nice and when you make these you'll see how simple these are to make - give it a try it.
FYI, the crochet string priced at $3.99 for hundreds of yards on a spool is available in a variety of colors everywhere yarn is sold. Changing out the color of the valance fringe and tie backs seasonally is very affordable.
This same type of string was used to make some of the tassels you see in the Gallery Tassels Category as well as the Summer Sandals in the Gallery Footware Category take a look at these too.
If I had paid an upscale decorator alot of money to add fringe, I'd be living with the colors for a long while. However My Own Fringemaker liberates sewers to create fabulous fringe right now. Beautifully done, fabric covered boxes! Great catch alls perfect on the bedside table These decorator boxes are so nice, they could grace any room shelf or table and add that touch of class. Kathi decorated and fringed this set of boxes. She used Christopher Lowell fabrics and coordinated yarns into fringe matching the fabrics. Kathi gave the fringe on the smaller box a hair cut - trimming it for a slightly different twist from the larger box. Note there is a medallion on top of large box and pearls gracing small box at the bottom. These are ordinary boxes from the Hobby store. Who'd guess? You too can do this! Give it a try.
Note: Change out fabrics and yarns matching school colors... or decorate the boxes with faux leather or suede fabrics for a more masculine look. Email photos of what you create.
Please try this project!
Here are Kathi's instructions:
Quilting + Fringe = beautiful pillow. Quilters what you can do with fringe?
Pillow measures 16" x16" with 2" drop length of looped fringe, lapped zipper back closure.
Wonderfully full and lush fringe created with 2 ply mitten yarn.
This beautiful pillow was made by my good friend Sally!
Thank you Sally for sharing your creativity with all of us!
Isn't this pillow beautiful?
This was a special techniques class. The result was a custom embroidered pillow framed with 48" custom fringe.
Every single pillow was unique and gorgeous partly because the students chose their own thread colors.
One of the techniques was to create 48" fringe using My Own Fringemaker.
To Make 48" of fringe. Set up fringe maker.
My friend, Dayna sewed, embroidered and framed out the pillow with custom fringe. The end result is a beautiful custom pillow.
She generously let me take it to the Paducah Quilt Show for showcasing as well as place it here in the Gallery.
Back side shows lap zipper.
Pillow measures 12" x 12", fringe is 48" with a 3" drop.
You too can make 48" of fringe in one winding with My Own Fringemaker. Start creating today!
Dayna, this is a beautiful decorator pillow; thanks so much for sharing it for everyone see!
This adorable lamp with shade was purchased at a hobby store.
The base was sprayed green.
The shade came with lower beaded edge; however there are many beads by the yard sold very inexpensively so you could add your own.
The topper was made of the mini ladder ribbon yarn. We often have some of this yarn for sale in various colors.
To make this lamp topper (or a garter, think weddings and proms) measure around the circumference of the lamp shade.
Place rods into My Own Fringemaker in the holes that will yield the drop length desired. The closer together the shorter the drop length, the further apart the longer the fringe drop length.
Stitch elastic onto header, holding the yarn [fringe] slightly taught the length of the fringe to keep fringe from gathering up.
Place the garter onto the lamp shade.
Optional: Hide header stitching like I did. Add a little glue to header stitching and wind a couple of the yarn strings over the stitching to hide the stitching. I used glue that dries clear.
HINT: Create a lamp topper in school colors and use as a fund raiser! Or change it out seasonally for a fresh look.
This is not the easiest project, non-the-less it is a no brainer! Give it a try and email a photo of your project to share in the Gallery.

This stunning masterpiece was created by Debi Baker, a Baby Lock Educator. An amazing decorator pillow trimmed with fringe created from seven different yarns. The tiger design is from Zundt and sewn with a new soft light weight 40 wt metallic thread. The thread yields a nice looking supple design.
Debi, made fringe first with a couple of yarns but wanted a more robust look, so she kept winding additional yarns onto the rods.
The final result is thick lush custom fringe after woundimg on seven different yarns layering each one on top of the previous yarn.
The gorgeous pillow fits over a 16" square form, however with the generous flange plus fringe it has a much larger appearance.
Thank you for loaning this high end pillow for display in our booth at Martha's Sewing Market, May 2010!
I understand this pillow caused quite a roar of reviews when Debi showcased it on a sewing cruise to Alaska! It IS Fabulous!

This is a show stopping fringe pillow ~ both sides are awesome! The four squares are embroidered featuring Anita Good Designs. The four squares are sewn together to make one large square. Melinda taught one side in a class. Please read My Blog Events for additional photos of event fun where these beautiful pillows were created. Everyone had so much fun, embroidering, making fringe and laughing all the while! Note the combination of yarns made into fringe which set off and accentuate both sides of the pillow.
FYI: The thread colors coordinated beautifully on both sides of the pillow. If the colors look off it might be the photo or your computer resolution or a combination of both.

This pillow was my inspirational piece that started it all. After choosing fabrics, designs, stablilizer and thread. Using embroidery digitizing software, morfing the deisgn to make it mine and stitching it with perfect spacing - I wasn't about to drive to the local store and shop for fringe. I was intrigued with embroidery machines because of what I could create. Embroidery software offers us more creative options on morphing, changing and creating designs. Until the invention of My Own Fringemaker there weren't any options to create fringe. I didn't like letting someone else limit my fringe options by what was on the shelf available to buy.
NEVER again be limited in choices of fringe, now you make it yourself! Now You can control the colors, texture and fringe drop length. Make as much as you need. Make it for everything! The STRAND used to make fringe is our private line of 36 colors launching Fall 2011.
This is why My Own Fringemaker was developed ~ ~ controlling home decorating and wardrobe embellishments start to finish - NICE! Ohhhhvery nice!

We all have a chair like this or something similar around the house. Upholster the seat and add your own fringe for some pop. This is an easy way to bring a new accent color into the room; new seat covering trimmed with fringe and coordinate pillow shams with fringe. Would bringing your new colors over to the curtain tie backs and a valance give a decorator look to the room?
To make this fringe, I placed the rods in holes to create the header and drop approximately 3" overall. Make fringe drop lengths that work for your project. Now that you can make your own fringe, decide what drop length and which style of fringe would look best. Make various style fringes for different projects in the same room. For example, the chair and valance could have loose fringe, the shams and curtain tie backs could be looped. How about trimming the table topper next to your bed why not wind on a couple of additional colors or textures to continue the look but change it up ever so quietly? If you wind on colors and you don't like the look, unwind and start over until you get the colors you love.
You're in the drivers seat, create the fringe you want. To order My Own Fringemaker, add to cart.

Create this upscale look yourself~ it's easy, easy! This brand new wedge style pillow would be perfect for a dorm room or any place people lounge when reading. Imagine the delight of someone receiving a pillow covered in school colors or in sorority or fraternity colors. Let your imagination soar and you'll envision many ways to incorporate this idea into your decor. The pillow purchased at TJ Max for $6.99 was recovered to match our guest room. It was more economical to cover this ready made pillow than buy a pillow form and cover it. Do what works for your time and budget.
Look closely at the fringe, you can see the rods were placed close together, yielding a narrow looped fringe. I wound on several color strands at one time, stitched down the center between the rods. Take the rod unit to your flat work surface. Remove the rotator arms and slipped the fringe off the rods. See the loops on both sides of centered stitching? I did purchase some narrow ribbon to hide the center stitching. After attaching the fringe to the pillow, I glued the narrow ribbon in place over top the header stitching creating a high end decorator look.
The ribbon detail looks like stitching produced by the Sashiko Machine sold by Baby Lock dealers.

Laura G. of Stafford, VA says, "The Black and White pillow was made with two eyelash yarn fringe, black and white. I did not cut the fringe to maintain the look I wanted for the pillow. The front was embellished using the Baby lock Embellisher at the Christopher Nejman event June 2010. The (pillow) center was embroidered using a design of his in silver and gold metallic threads. The back is a stretch faux suede and embroidered with another of Christopher's Designs from the Elegant Decor I from Amazing Designs. I created the pillow after reading his Pillows book. The seminar I attended inspired me to make other pillows as well."
Thank you, Laura for sharing this designer pillow with us. You have pulled it all together in a masterpiece! Fringe On, you go Girl!!

Several members of my family have dedicated their lives to fire fighting and/or collecting fire equipment artifacts. One asked me to freshen this pillow.
New stuffing plumped it up and the pop came from creating fabulous fringe using My Own Fringemaker. I used four strands various ribbon and yarn. One ribbon is slightly wider than I usually prefer at 3/8"; however it's size mimics the size of the hose and redirects the eye back into the picture. This is so dramatic in person wish you were here to see it. Creating fringe like this is easy to do - try freshening a pillow or two by adding fringe you create yourself. Save alot of money when you can create your own trim and tassels!
For those of you who would like to know the steps I took to refresh this pillow as well as create and sew in the fringe; I will be blogging the steps. Click on the Blog tab at the top of the Web Site to see the steps.

Martha T., a friend, from Paris, TN and I were creating fringe with different yarns and while looking around for ribbons too, we spotted this short lamp, it stands approximately 15" tall. Never before has it been this easy to make up to 48" of fringe in one sitting.

I created three pillowcases trimmed in fringe for three grands in college or headed to school soon. Each pillow slip was fringe coordinated in their favorite colors. I was hoping the new cases would encourage extra rest just before exams. From all reports the grades are great - might have been the pillow cases?
The two blue fringes were made with rods closer together. [Of course separately, one at a time.] A mixture of yarns and ribbons were added to get the custom look I was after. These fringes were created by sewing down the center of the rods and ribbons several times; take the rod unit back to flat table and then removed the sewn fringe from the rods. Lastly finish constructing the pillow and sew fringe on pillow cases. Sewing the fringe to the pillow case, I stitched on top of the header stitching - right down the center.
The pink pillowcase fringe was made with rods further apart. This fringe was all ribbon no yarn - three ribbons wound on the rods at the same time the width needed to go around the pillow case and the header sewn into the seam between the body and casing hem. Go ahead an make these - too easy!! And the smiles will reward you! Send photos of your creations!

This photo collage shows; three steps of the lamp shade embellishment project; start, done and completed shade with fringe trim - see what you think.
To get started, purchase a night light with adhesive shade. Match color of shade fabric to [guest] room, created complimentary fringe and glued it onto the shade. I thought the overal look could bump up another notch up with beads so I glued on over the fringe header stitching [beads purchased by the yard].
There is another sample night light with fringe on the shade too, adorned with airplane fabric on the shade, look at that one too.

This pretty little wall hanging is so colorful, yet I wondered, if fringe trim were added what affect there'd be? Using Parrot [wide yarn], with rods close together I easily created enough fringe trim to place around the whole quilt perimeter.
The last detail, attaching green gimp, in center of the fringe.
There's no rules when creating your own fringe trim custom, have fun!
I think the fringe plus green gimp makes this wall quilt visually pop.
What's your opinion - do you like it plain without fringe? With fringe on it ? Or all the way with fringe and green gimp centered on the fringe?

MoMo looks so happy! She is holding the beautiful pillow made by her Grandmother. Linda made this over sized, amply stuffed pillow with fringe for her Lil' angel. Linda had a grand time creating long fringe to frame the pillow. I'm not sure if this gift was a surprise or MoMo helped choose the yarn colors to make the fringe trim either way isn't it a cool pillow!
Linda is the owner and creator of all things beautiful at sewazdesigns.com Linda says, "... this is a pillow I made my Granddaughter, she loves all things girly, so the fringe was a BIG hit."
Please check out Linda's site and while there tell her you saw the pillow with fringe made for Mo Mo! I did not see this pillow with decorative fringe on her site, but when I typed MoMo into the search box, 34 pages of terrific embroidery designs popped up.
Her site is http://www.sewazdesigns.com
Thank you Linda for showing everyone MoMo's fringe pillow !

Pictured are two options of fringe trim, which one do you like the best?
If you like both equally, change them whenever the mood strikes using snap tape.
HINT: Use this idea of interchangeable fringe trim for your big beautiful quilts. Adding removable fringe to the borders changes your quilts for the holiday, seasonally.
IDEA ~ If your quilt is a little too small and out of proportion for positioning on a different wall; adding fringe trim to quilt borders will extend it's size.
