This fringed purse is so beautiful in person and is one of several crazy patch purses created by Melinda!
I wish each one of you could see it. Melinda works her magic in everything she creates. She was one of my first customers and has created the most beautiful originals projects. Look for other totes and purses made by Melinda in this Totes Category.
The crazy patch purse was taught by Barbara Randle in Nashville. We used this class as one of my consumer focus groups. Each participant created custom fringe using My Own Fringemaker. The ladies created such beautiful fringe for their totes with such ease! I'm thinking we might have sold out of My Own Fringemakers that day, it was crazy fun! In fact, I ran into one of the ladies who was in the focus group/class at the AQS Knoxville Show two weeks ago...small world!

This tote, store bought was pretty good looking, by adding a tassel it now commands attention - less is more!
Adding a tassel might be all you need for a complete style upgrade. The tassel attached to zipper pull performs double duty.
To make this tassel supplies needed:
My Own Fringemaker, threaded straight stitch sewing machine, a wooden bead with center hole, glue, tiny headed crochet hook. yarn or ribbon, STRAND, string.
Set up rod unit and place rods in furthest holes. Wind on strand, ribbon or yarn you'd like your tassel to be. [I wound on approximately 10 yrds].
Remove rod unit from base and take to sewing machine to sew header.
Slide one rod under the presser foot and position foot parrellel to inside of one rod.
Slow your machine speed down.
Choose the longest stitch.
Straight stitch parallel along the rod, repeat several times.
Remove rod unit from the sewing machine and take whole rod unit to table for finishing.
The tassel head, use some type of wooden bead or ball with a center hole.
Cut approximately 15" of ribbon from which the tassel will hang.
Knot the two loose ends together and pull the looped end (opposite the knotted end) up through the center of the bead. Sometimes a crochet hook works great to pull the strand up through the center. The knot should be on the bottom of the wooden bead. Tug on it slightly - if it looks like it might pull through - pull the hanger back through the hole and tie a larger knot or add a button or bead to help prevent the knot from pulling through. Reinsert the looped end up through the center of the bead and proceed to next step.
Prepare to glue up an inch or so and let it tack up. I use Beacons FABRI-TAC.
Remove one rotating arm from the rod unit and scooch the fringe along rod towards this end for removal.
Dot some glue onto the header stitching.
Inch by inch slide fringe off the rod and start wrapping the header around the wooden bead attaching it to the tacky glue.
Continue gluing, sliding, wrapping around the bead until you've used all the fringe.
Wrap until you have the tassel thickness you want, this is the tassel skirt. If you need more material for a fuller skirt - make more fringe - repeating the steps
Create the tassel neck:
Use approximately 14" of ribbon, strand, rope, etc. wind around and around just below the wooden bead.
Every couple winding turns, tie a knot and keep winding, save the last few inches.
Pull the last few inches up through the neck, knot, bury the knot.
HINT: A tiny headed crochet hook maybe helpful to snake the last couple of inches up through.
Done! - how easy was this! Try it!

This adorable two sided embellished tote is sure to be a hit for the young at heart. In a hurry? Embellish a purchased tote by adding just fringe. The funny face embroidery designs are from Viking and are still available for sale. Here's a bright idea, why not embroider a happy face and make fringe the hair color of the gift recipient? Be sure to visit Melinda's on line fabric shop for a nice selecetion of fabrics. How sweet is this purse? No pattern to copy, just size to your preferences and use your stash on hand. I used removable handles so they can move from purse to purse. My grand angels live far from us, so now I can make the purse body and send just the purse body..saves postage and the cost of more handles. The small key fob was a built in design in my Baby Lock Elegante, stitchit out in matching thread colors. Can you imagine the key fob by itself as an adorable party favor, maybe even add fringe all around the fob too? Use thread colors to match your theme.
Please note the danity fringe dancing sweetly. To get this affect after you attached the fringe inside the seam you will need to stitch- in-the-ditch to keep it upward, using gravity to pull it down somewhat - looks adorable in person wish you were here!
Back to the purse featured above, for your angels, make a purse using removable handles. Take the measurement between the two handles down by the ears where your tab will be set for the handle to latch onto and write it down.
Who doesn't love to get surprise mail?
I periodically create an additional purse that will fit the same handles and mail it off as a surprise.
This purse body folds into an envelope and is lightweight so postage is minimal. Your angel can transfer handles from the previous purse onto the new purse body. This teaches our lil' angels ideas about recycling, reusing and being green, Sweet, sweet!
Here's how I made this purse:
Take the measurement between the two handles [down by the ears where your tab will be set for the handle to latch onto] and write it down.
You will sew and assemble the purse like a pillow case with separate header.
The fringe was made using 1/8" and 1/4" ribbon ( found at sewing, hobby stores and Wally World). Some yarns maybe available from this site - depending on our stock. If you are searching for something specific andyou don't see it, send along an email and we might have one or two skeins of what you are hunting for.
Fringe has 2" drop. Place rods three inches apart in base unit. Wind on your choice of ribbons and yarns. Straight stich next to one rod several times to make a strong header. Remove whole rod unit from under presser foot and take to flat surface.
For loose hanging fringe, cut fringe off the rod opposite the sewn header rod. Now you have the header still on one rod and the othe end of the fringe is hanging loose, right?
How to attach fringe to purse:
1). Place fringe with loose ends pointing towards the pink band and bury header between seams of upper band and lower body, straight stitch.
2). Final stitching, in-the-ditch with loose ends still pointing upwards (towards the pink band). When purse is held upright, fringe falls whimsically downward. Made fringe using 1/8" and 1/4" ribbon ( found at sewing, hobby and Wally World). Some yarns maybe available from this site - depending on our stock.
IDEA: Trick or Treat bags or other use bags can be made to use with these handles one more re-use for these adorable handles.
This is a great project to use up stash fabrics and yarns and ribbons!
Personally I think every Grandma should buy a set of these handles for each grand girl. Then proceed to make a purse a month or for every special occasion. Easy on the budget and both Mom and grand Angel will adore you even more!
I can't wait to see what you come up with, email photos.

The oriental influence exudes a feeling of endurance. This custom fringe trim tote boasts several pockets sewn inside, one to hold an energy drink for summer survival, another for your mobile and one for wallet. The focus tassel was created using My Own Fringemaker. Complete the tassel to the length you desire by adjusting the rods. Complete tassel and leave it looped by sliding the tassel off the rods . Braid some remaining STRAND to make cording, appprox 3" and knot. Cut the ends. Set aside.
Glue sewn header part around a wooden bead, or something else hard like a bead from a necklace to give the tassel head support. Let dry.
Next glue braided cording around the header onto the bead.
On the back side of tote, we added a fringe trim medallion for whimsy. It is trimmed out with the same STRAND as used for the tassel; so whether coming or going there's something visual to enjoy on this tote. The material was the inspiration for this tote, no pattern just fold and sew according to how much fabric you have. Create your own trim today, to pick up My Own Fringemaker click on the Shop page.
The handles were sold in a package of two.
Here's what I did;
1. the wood was natural and untreated, so a quick sanding with fine sand paper to make sure there weren't any tiny burrs.
2. Wipe handles off with a tack rag and now the handles are ready for stain.
3. Brush on and wipe off excess before it dries.
4. Insert into loops and you're ready to go to class with your fringed tote.

This stylish purse is sure to start the holiday season with excitement. The purse was created by Ann Travis of KY, using a Baby Lock Embellisher. One side was made with a 16" square of fabric that drew into a textured smaller piece of fabric due to the 12 barbed needles. Ann used one strip of the same fabric on the second side and added other fabrics with shimmer building an upscale looking purse that will take her through the entire holiday season. Ann created fringe using My Own Fringemaker, and attached it to the purse. The handle is made of Christmas tree garland. This purse is fun to make, try it.
Please view Ann's second purse she generously shared; same category titled, holiday Theme Purse by Ann Travis.
HINT: Time is short, airlines are charging for extra baggage; choose your wardrobe for an event or vacation and make a tote using all the colors so it coordinates with all you are packing!

A crazy patch style tote with monkey theme is center stage with custom designed fringe. Melinda's interpretation. of a pattern from Barbara Randle incorporates all varieties of string, strand, yarn and fancy stitching to make it authentically a crazy patch. Melinda created the same crazy fringe trim and added it horizontally to accent the purse. Melinda went a step further and added a tail of decorative fringe that hangs whimsically off one side at the top of the purse. Melinda also loves to use the bottom of purses as an art canvas. This quirky little embellished tote is perfect for a quick run into town. Melinda created this tote and isn't it adorable? Flowers and petals have the Grandkids names on them. If you have more grands, create more flowers and petals. Note the bottom edge of the tote is fringed. She captured every color in the the flower design and created custom fringe to match.
Melinda pulled from her stash of yarns and ribbons to make fringe. She wound her ribbons and yarns onto the rods, sewed the header and cut the yarns and ribbons loose from one rod, creating loose hanging fringe. She enclosed the header into the bottom seam of the bag and stitched it closed. She wanted the flowers and petals to be the focus so by reducing the drop length of the fringe, the bag is framed just perfectly and the flowers and petals remain the design focus.

Every color yarn and ribbon I had to make fringe complimented the color of this tote. The hardest decision was narrowing the decision of mixing and matching the yarns to create the fringe. Making fringe is so easy and so much fun. Look around the Gallery at the samples and watch the instructional videos behind the HOW TO Tab, ...join the fun!
After winding on the yarns, I sewed down the center between the rods several times to create a header. Remove rod unit from under the presser foot and take to a flat surface to work on.
I cut the looped fringe off both rods resulting in loose hanging fringe. When attaching the fringe to the tote, sew down the center, right over the header stitching. DONE!
Easy, easy, totes go anywhere - a fringed tote would be a nice hostess gift - no worries about matching home

School is starting soon - dance classes will start too. What little girl wouldn't step a little higher carrying this fringe shoe tote? Marsha H. of Texas created this adorable shoe tote and it is too cute! She showcased this fringe tote at the Martha Pullen Market Show in Arlington, 2010. Every one who stopped by could think of at least one dancer who'd be proud to carry this fringe trim tote! Marsha had fun shopping for ribbon and yarn to make fringe. She wound ample ribbon onto the rods yielding a full and lush fringe. The rods were closer together to make the short cut fringe at the top of the tote. The rods were placed in the furthest holes creating 6" cut fringe for the bottom fringe.
During the show Marsha mentioned her plans to make this fringe shoe tote in school colors for their fund raisers - - -the fringe trim totes should sell like hot cakes! THANK YOU Marsha for your creative energy, help and encouragement.

Cowgirls at heart will love to carry this western flair purse! Purchased purse from large discount store.
Created fringe using several different ribbons and using My Own Fringemaker.
Measured the circumference around the skirt.
Set up the rod unit, Placed My Own Fringemaker rods close together, wound ribbon on to rods the width needed plus three inches for the back pocket. Sewed down the center between the rods. Remove rod unit from sewing machine and take to flat working surface.
I cut the loops from both rods because I wanted loose fringe on both sides of the header stitching.
Cutting the ribbons at the rods, creates loose fringe.
Straight stitch the fringe onto skirt bottom. For the finishing touch, glue matching ribbon over the header stitching and also onto the belt.
Glue rather than stitch fringe into the back pocket so pocket is not sewn closed and still usable. You can do this too!
Why not make a memory with your little girl, let her pick out the ribbon colors, you sew the fringe, let her help glue - now smile for the camera!

Using a placemat for the purse body, adding trim and creating custom fringe makes this purse terrific!
This cut fringe purse will take you everywhere you want to go this fall.
How to make this purse:
Kathi, sewed up the sides of a placemat and squared the bottom so it sets-up straight.
The 2" fabric trim, was cut to fit the top of the purse from her stash.
The fabric trim, sewn around the top.
The fringe was made using eyelash yarn, rods were four inches apart.
Wind on the yarn, sew the header and cut the bottom of yarn from the rod.
Fringe was attached with double sided tape - no sewing on the fringe.
To create this fluffy looking fringe, Kathi brushed the yarn to fluff it.
Purchased handles to coordinate. Isn't this the cutest purse?
Great job Kathi - thanks for your support, you are super!

Fringe takes this ordinary beach bag to a new height. The bag is made of nylon screening material. I like bags with visibility - saves hunting/search time in the bag. Loose fringe was made and the header glued to the outside top rim of the bag. Looks like we're packed and ready for a nice time at the shore. You too can do this, easy, easy!
To Make this project:
Gather: Straight stitch sewing machine, coordinating thread colors to project, glue, popsicle stick or q-tip, scissors, several yards of yarn and/or ribbon, ruler and of course My Own Fringemaker.
Measure the distance around the tote top. Set up My Own Fringemaker. Place rods in the third and fifth holes of the rotator arms.
Wind on the yarns to the length needed for the tote circumference. Remove rod unit from fringemaker base and take rod unit to sewing machine. Place one rod under the presser foot and center presser foot between the two rods.
Straight stitch several times (maybe 5 or 6 times) down the center of the rods to create a secure header.
Remove rod unit from under the presser foot and take whole unit to your work table.
To make loose fringe, cut the yarn from each rod and both ends will be loose.
Dab glue onto header stitching and also around the top of the tote. Sometimes I use a q-tip or popsicle stick to dab glue onto projects.
Once glue is slightly tacky begin placing fringe onto the tote, glued fringe side to glue on tote. Hold in place with spring style clothes pins until glue is dry. Remove clothes pins and pack tote for a trip to the beach! maybe I should bite the bullet and order those. ..hate to spend the money when there aren't any orders. Adorable gifts - bags just to go to Grandma's house, sleepovers, school etc.

Don't you love to carry a kicky Lil' purse to holiday events? Have you priced the kicky Lil purses at the store?
Well my goodness, no need to spend the eqilivent of a week's worth of groceries just to have zip in your holiday accessories.
Now you can make a purse for every outfit and every occasion and never break the bank, isn't this perfect! NO Dorothy this isn't Kansas, it's reality.
Carry your purses with all the confidences there are, knowing you look fashionable, created it yourself and did it for pennies! Does it get better than this . . . I think NOT.
Start with a placemat plaid on one side and reverse side is solid red screamming to be made into a fringe clutch. All seams are glued, including the zipper across the inside flap. I like a zipper in this style fringe purse to keep the stuff from spilling out for everyone to see.
I folded the placemat in 2/3 for the body. The remaining 1/3 is for a fold over fringe trim top flap. To make this cut fringe choose various mitten yarns and colored strands of your thicker threads. I actually had so much fun winding on that I made too much fringe and attached it around both the front and inside of the top flap.
To Make this fringe ~
So that no fringe goes unappreciated, I sewed the fringe across the front and across the inside front flap too. Why not - it's one of a kind. The green button is actually an oversized pin and can be removed and relocated to another purse. Wouldn't it look great on a St. Patty's Green fringe purse?
Take note of the mirror on inside top flap too. It is a plastic reflective sheet available from JoAnn and Hobby Lobby in the purse making section. It too is glued in place - the mirror is a nice upgrade. It's very nice to look into a mirror, check out your DO before making an enterance. I cut a rectangular section from the reflective sheet and have more left over to insert into another fringe purse. Give it a try, make purses to use, and some for gifts and then sell some - everyone loves this fringe purse, it's a cutie!
